DAY 110 FRIDAY JULY 13 LAKE CONSTANCE

On Sunday April 29 we finished this jigsaw puzzle (see day 35 of the blog).  Pierre told us it was Lindau harbour on the German bank of the Bodensee (Lake Constance) and he knew it well as he lived near Zurich.  It was an eerie feeling to visit this place today and recognise the fine details we had worked on in order to solve the puzzle.  We realised that the flowers were in a window box on the first floor of a hotel facing the harbour.  We saw dozens of postcards for sale but none of them had the flowers that made this picture so beautiful.  We took this photo to see if we could approximate the spot it was taken from.

Not a bad try from memory, but what about the ship?  Here comes one:

Well, that is the Koenigin Katherina and we bought half price tickets with our Eurail pass to do two hours on the lake.  We took photos from the ship.

So now we know what the harbour looks like from the other side.  Our ship took us to the Swiss town of Rorschach on the other side of the lake which is 15 kilometers wide at this point and over 70 kilometers long.
The blue sign says Rorschach Hafen and the skipper in the white cap is guiding the ship up to the pier by remote control.  The green building is Federerhaus, so maybe this is a keen tennis town.  Where was Roger born?  When we returned to Lindau after a lovely cruise we inspected the lion more closely.

Here comes another cruise ship.

This one was the Karlsruhe and we caught it squeezing through the gap between the lighthouse and the lion.  Caught  another one called the Baden as it was turning around ready to come back through.
We were amused to see bush care enemy number one under cultivation here.
We wandered up the carfree shopping street and could see Lindau was a popular town with tourists and we did have a nice day there.
Our train trip to the lake and back to Chur  followed the Rhine river most of the way, so we were in wide valleys but still surrounded by mountains.
