DAY 171 WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 12 REST DAY

Another big breakfast after a sleep in.  The stage in the Dining room featured two mammoth guitars.
The day was spent loading the Kindle up with free classic books, helping Pam fight Amazon as she tried to determine why she could not buy any books and catching up with the blog. We ventured out on our own at 2pm to do some shopping, dreading the treacherous traffic.  We have never seen a city with such a high proportion of Landcruiser and Lexus 4 wheel drives.  If the people are poor they must be putting a high proportion of their income into new cars.  The nature of the roads suggests small cars will not last long.  This service cover was on a very busy corner and cars were running over it all day.
We reached the large Department Store without getting run over and walked into a David Jones type store.
Emma recommended this place for buying souvenirs and we found some we liked.  There were plenty of floor staff but this fellow must have been clubbing till late last night.
The salesman whose arm you can see in the foreground was covering for him. At the exit of the shop there was a town planning model.  You know that I find such models photogenic, but this one had a glass roof which caused reflections from all directions.
This is a plan for apartments along the river front.  Very ambitious. We had skipped lunch so walked to the Grill Restaurant for an early dinner of the same variety as last night. Just as yummy.  Back to the hotel, finding the city easy to navigate but difficult to get across the roads.  We had time to get another picture of the Green Goddess Tara.
Tonight we pack to be ready for a 6.30am departure from the hotel tomorrow and a 31 hour train trip to Beijing.
