DAY 173 FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14 CHINA

When we woke up the train was passing through mountainous country and we followed a valley all the way into Beijing.  The scenery in the mountains was quite spectacular and the train passed over many bridges and through many tunnels.

We saw large vegetable farms growing corn, cabbages, chia, celery, etc.  Old farming methods were being used: a donkey pulling a plough, handcutting of corn, scarecrows. We saw numerous small villages and several towns with rows and rows of 20 story apartment blocks.

Most of the houses had solar hot water collectors and some had solar power panels. We had our first view of the Great Wall running along the hillside several kilometers away.

Most of the way there were two or three separate railway lines made.  They use their trains very extensively and we saw no semitrailers on the roads.  In Beijing the sky was blue, the air was very clear and it was very warm.  We had been told not to leave the platform as it was very busy in the main hall and it would be difficult for our guide to find us.  The train arrived 20 minutes earlier than the time on our schedule and we waited some time on the platform.
Time to look at the bullet train on the next platform.

Pam made a phone call and we eventually contacted David Wang, who came down the stairs to meet us.
The station square was very busy.
David guided us through.

He loaded us into a Chinese people mover and checked us into the Chowwengmen hotel where we had very nice rooms. We had not eaten a lot on the train so found our way through a huge subterranean food hall for a nice Chinese dinner.
