DAY 34 SATURDAY APRIL 28 SAVANNAH

We woke to a sunny and cooler day. After breakfast we took our usual
stroll around the deck and noticed a large navy ship in the west. Malcolm
took a zoom photo and later a helicopter flew around our ship. Ian waved
to the observer but he did not wave back. Earlier we had seen a long trail of
choppy water in front of the ship across to the navy vessel. Perhaps it was the
wake of a submarine. The ship charts showed this area off Florida to be a
sub training area. A pilot came on board at 3pm but there was no sign of
land. We realised later that the Savannah River has a huge delta and the land
is flat for many miles around. It took three hours to reach the city but along the
river we saw dolphins, pelicans, terns, an American eagle, a crowded
beach and some national civil war monument forts. The city of Savannah is
absolutely gorgeous and we loved every minute of our time there. The river
acts as the border between Georgia and South Carolina so the town lines the
south side and as we sailed through the town centre we could see many of the
interesting buildings and hundreds of tourists were wandering along the river
wall. We even passed a "Showboat" and a small tall ship. Next Saturday there
will be a festival of tall ships. We would have loved that. Pierre was still poorly
so we went ashore at 9:30pm with Chris and Ian in a luxury minibus that
specialises in wharf passengers. It picked us up in town at midnight and brought
us back to the ship gangway for $75 all up. We spent an hour and a half in Star
bucks with wifi dealing with 75 emails and en days of blog. Our night at the
office. When they closed we wandered through crowded streets of the well
preserved old town. More than half the 30,000 residents seem to be black and
well fed. We stumbled upon a statue of John Wesley. We think Marcia can
explain that. The other two went to a small bar by the river and had a great
night. On returning to the Manet we noticed that there were women driving
the container trucks around the wharves.
