DAY 67 THURSDAY MAY 31 MECHELEN

It was a lot colder today, cloudy with a little rain in the morning.  Lyn did not go on the ride but stayed on the barge. The barge had an appointment with London Bridge (in Antwerp?) to get underway.  The cyclists were let off on the other side of the bridge then rode back through the traffic.  The first lock that the barge went through had a sliding gate and the next one had swinging gates.  The barge arrived in Mechelen at 1.30pm.  The riders had to navigate through three large towns today, so needed to follow Jan closely and negotiate a lot of traffic lights.  For the first time on the tour a group of three at the back took a wrong turn.  Malcolm was permanent tailender and called the other two back and waited for Jan to come back and redirect us.  There were plenty of quiet sections again and a nice cafe for morning tea today. At the end of the day Lee's GPS estimated we had ridden about 200km, all very comfortably and not one drop of rain while riding. After tea we went for a walk around the cathedral in Mechelen.  This tower had over 500 steps as reported by Nancy who had gone up in the afternoon.  That would make it much higher than the York Minster Tower whic we had gone up.  Got back to the barge before 11pm.
