DAY 80 WEDNESDAY JUNE 13 RING OF KERRY

This was a long RAIL TOUR day.   Out of bed at 5am and back to the hotel at 10pm.  The company gave us 30 euro discount each for our eurail pass so we paid for a group tour.  We met the tour guide in his yellow company jacket and paraded with 50+ others to the train.  The group broke up as we stopped along the way until only 8 of us were left at Killarney.  After waiting 20 minutes at the station a  tour bus arrived and took us into town where 21 others climbed in.  First stop was a mock "bog village" from the famine times which was a 10 euro extra so we gave it a miss.  Morning tea was at a pub where 4 other busloads were there and lunch was also very crowded and not very good food.  They always select venues where you cannot go elsewhere to eat.  The scenery made up for these criticisms.  We stopped regularly with views of the coast and the 3 large lakes and the driver gave us a well informed commentary.  He told us that rhododendrons were an exotic weed in the national park and were being pulled out as fast as they could manage. Other weeds were white rhubarb and cordelynes.  A worthwhile day after all.
